The voice acting is stellar, the music is incredible, and it displays some of the best animation ever seen. This movie is gorgeous in just about every way. I mean the visuals, sound track and cast are the best I've seen from an animated movie I would definitely recommend it and remember to look at your life through heavens eyes 😉 Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Lucifer M I recently rewatched this masterpiece of animated cinema after over a decade of not seeing it. Granted I was 8 yrs old when it came out, had seen it at the theaters opening weekend and had worn out the VHS, and a few yrs later, the DVD to annihilation. I grew up in a very devout Christian household with VERY religious family and this film was a HUGE deal when it came out (I’m agnostic now but besides the point). This film is just breathtaking! The animation is gorgeous, the voice acting is top notch, grade A+ and the way the story was told are not only very accurate, but done in such a caring way. The symbolism, foreshadowing, thematic/emotional depth and even the elements of faith are done tastefully! It’s not “preachy” where when you see it, you don’t feel like you’re watching something that’s made by a specific religious group trying to force their faith onto others. It had the perfect amount of historical/faithful accuracy and creative liberties as well. They didn’t lean too much one way or the other. Also, I find it ludicrous that Egypt banned this film for their portrayal of ancient Egypt! Ummmm…..THATS HOW IT *mostly* WAS!! Ignoring and denying historical accuracy does not make it go away or untrue. Yet films like The Mummy, Gods of Egypt, and a few others were never banned yet completely BUTCHER and make caricature out of ancient Egypt history. I also disagree with people that say the film depicts too much violence. Again, in order to tell the story correctly and accurately (as well as thematic depth) you cannot gloss over it’s crucial context of the cruelty that took place. Why go to the promised land if your current home is okay? After the first watching, it hit me immediately. The Prince of Egypt is the greatest animated film ever created.I'm a Christian, but, even then, the story doesn't revolve around God and having faith. It centers itself in the relationship between brothers. The musics are stellar. Hans Zimmer and Stephen Schwartz really did their best on this movie! "Deliver Us" is up there with The Hunchback of NotreDame for greatest opening sequence. "The Plagues" is the perfect blending of great music and great animation. I just have two issues with the music, and probably the whole movie. "Playing with the big boys" isn't the best one, but, it is the "comedic relief" song. And, when compared with other ones, like "Hakuna Matata", it sounds better and better. The other issue is the timing of "When You Believe". Moses has just cried because of the death of his nephew, in which he helped. And Miriam just sings out of nowhere a hopeful animated song. I think there should have been more time in between those two moments. The animation is magneficient. Every single detail is gourgeous. From the face expressions, characters' movements and even, for me, the best climax in animated film. I will always be awed by the parting of the Red Sea. It truly amazes me. This is truly the greatest achievement of animated cinema. The characters are all great, but I want to focus on Rameses. The voice acting of Ralph Fiennes is excellent. It truly immerses the character. The scene in the throne room when Moses returns is truly amazing. Ramses goes through every emotion. Sadness. Anger. Regret. Frustration. And, after it all, vengeance. And his face portrays is perfectly. We see Rameses wanting to pardon Moses when they meet after the 10 plagues song, and the camera shot just shows how great of an influence the pharaoh Seti is on Rameses. In the ending, he screams for Moses from the other side of the Sea. But, I like to think he screams out of, not anger, but plea. He pleas for his brother to return. I guess Rameses is easily the deepest, most well-written villain in animated film history, and one of the best villains in all of cinema. The center of the movie, as I said, is Moses and Rameses' relationship. It's deep and realistic. It truly emphasises love early on in the movie, going to being rivals after Moses tells Rameses he has returned only to free the slaves, and hate, after Moses helps killing Rameses' son and destroying his kingdom. This relationship evolves with the movie. With everything said, even more than 20 years after it's release, The Prince of Egypt still holds up, animation-wise, music-wise, and is, truly, the best work Dreamworks has done, by a landslide. It's a masterpiece. And, yet, it doesn't have the love it deserves. It's oftenly overseen by it's religious aspect, and overshadowed by other more famous Dreamworks movies, like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon. Don't get me wrong, those aren't bad movies; I enjoyed evey Shrek except Shrek the Third,I liked the HTTYD trilogy, and loved the two first Kung Fu Panda movies. But, yet, The Prince of Egypt remains as Dreamworks best achievement, and the greatest animated film. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
